Sacramental Preparation

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism for infants and small children is celebrated as scheduled in English and in Spanish. Typically, the Rite of Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM. As with all parishes, Baptism at the Cathedral is reserved for members of the Cathedral parish, which means the family either lives within the geographical boundaries of the parish, or is a registered and contributing parish member. At least one parent must be Catholic. Children are only required to have one Godparent, but if there are two one must be male and the other female. Godparents must be baptized and confirmed Catholics, who are 16 years-old or older. If married, Godparents must be married in the Church. Like parents, Godparents must receive instruction and provide a letter from their parish attesting that have been instructed and they meet the criteria given above. Preparation classes and a pastoral meeting for parents are required. Classes are held essentially the first Tuesday of every other month.

Becoming Catholic

If you are an adult who is interested in joining the Catholic Church we invite you to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The process is year around and you can enter at any time. An adult must be in RCIA for twelve months (i.e., an entire liturgical year) prior to being received into the church at the Easter Vigil. For information about becoming Catholic or finding out more about the Catholic faith, please contact Tracey Fredman via e-mail, at  or by phone, 801-328-8941 ext. 104.

We also have the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC), which is for children in fourth grade through eighth grade who need to complete their Christian Initiation. This class prepares young people for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This class meets on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:45 AM on the lower level of the Cathedral.  For information about the RCIC, please contact Cathy Paiz at 801-328-8941 or email at .

Confirmation

For practicing Catholic adults, who for some reason or another, were never confirmed, there is a Diocesan Adult Confirmation held each year. Preparation for the reception of this sacrament takes place between Easter and Pentecost. Please contact Deacon John Kranz via e-mail, at  or by phone, 801-328-8941, sometime during Lent to inquire about instruction for Confirmation.

Marriage

The Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated at the Cathedral on Saturdays at 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM. The Sacrament of Matrimony is not celebrated during the holy season of Lent and Advent. Cathedral Parishioners must contact Fr. Martín Díaz at least six months in advance to begin the preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony. Catholics who are not members of the Cathedral parish inquiring about the use of the Cathedral should contact Arlie Llenares at 801-328-8941 ext. 106 or email at
