Safe Environment
Pope Benedict XVI addressed the child abuse scandal that so wounded our Catholic Community several times during his visit to the United States. He said, “We are deeply ashamed and will do all possible that this cannot happen in the future.”
Since the sexual abuse scandal became public, studies show that at least 20% of Americans are victims of some sort of sexual abuse by the time they turn eighteen. Tragically, this abuse occurs in all areas of society.
The Office of Safe Environment of the Diocese of Salt Lake City has developed a curriculum to provide safe environment training for our children. This curriculum was designed with two goals in mind: to promote and model safe environment principles and to help prevent child abuse by teaching our children about the right relationships and what to do when something is not right.
The Catholic Diocese and The Cathedral of the Madeleine Parish are committed to protecting children and young people. If you are aware of abuse or have ever been abused by clerics, church volunteers, or church workers, contact:
- Division of Child and Family Services at 1-800-678-9399
- For Pastoral assistance, contact the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 1-801-328-8641

Madeleine Arts and Humanities Festival
The annual Festival takes place the five Sunday evenings following Easter Sunday. The artists and performers are chosen from talent related to Utah and the West. The Festival committee works on finding the performers and assisting with the performances in the spring.
Pastoral Council
The pastoral council is made up of about 25 members who meet regularly as a group to help form the vision of our pastoral plan.
The Pastoral Council is a group of trusted lay-advisors who act as a sounding board and boots-on-the-ground support of the pastor's efforts to serve the Cathedral.
We do this by:
1. Staying up to date on cathedral happenings by attending regular Council Update Meetings and consuming parish communications (Flocknote, website, bulletins, etc.)
2. Informing the pastor or appropriate staff of needs/issues as they arise; i.e. facilities, parishioner wellbeing, ways to progress the pastoral plan, etc.
3. Acting as knowledgeable representatives of the Cathedral at public functions, welcoming parishioners/visitors, answering questions, promoting events, and gaining insight that may inform #2
4. Other tasks/responsibilities as requested by the pastor.
Watch our latest meeting here.
Respect for Life Ministry
The Cathedral Respect for Life Ministry serves the mission of Saint John Paul II to replace the Culture of death with the Culture of Life and Love. In accordance with the USCCB and our own Bishop Solis, our ministry focuses on pastoral care for women, prayer and worship, education, and public policy. We affirm the value of every human life, from the moment of conception to the end of life. We support mothers in need through the Cathedral Walking with Moms in Need and also in partnership with the Pregnancy Resource Center. We reach out to those in need of healing from abortion, and promote dignity of life for our elderly and disabled.
Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen
The Cathedral serves lunch at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, on the first Monday of each month, from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. We do understand, not everyone can come every month. If you would like to join us, you would be most welcome. Please email:
Tour Guide
When we are able tours are offered on Sundays after the 11:00 AM Mass. The usual tour is one hour. Each tour guide prepares his / her tour of the Cathedral from the general material guides. Contact Marty Seiner at for information on becoming a tour guide.
Young Adult
The Cathedral of the Madeleine Young Adult Ministry invites young adults to grow in faith, build authentic community, and live the Gospel. Our mission is to engage, form, and evangelize—helping young adults encounter Christ and share his love in everyday life.
We gather after the Sunday 6 PM Mass for fellowship and conversation. Throughout the year, we offer retreats, faith formation, Bible studies, Eucharistic adoration, service and volunteer opportunities, and social events that foster real community rooted in Christ.
Inspired by Mary Magdalene’s proclamation, “I have seen the Lord,” we seek to become joyful witnesses of Christ in our Church and our city.

General Information
Congratulations as you prepare yourselves for the Sacrament of Matrimony! The following guidelines will help insure that your wedding is a wonderful affair. Please read them carefully.
MARRIAGE PREPARATION:
This process is intended to assist couples in preparing for a Christian Sacramental Marriage in a thorough and responsible manner. A primary purpose of preparation is to facilitate communications between the couple. Residents of the Cathedral parish or nonresidents registered and active at the Cathedral for 18 months may be prepared for marriage at the Cathedral. Others requesting marriage need to contact the priest at your own parish for marriage preparation. You must belong to a parish to be married.
DOCUMENTS
There are certain documents that must be obtained for marriage. Please follow the directions of your parish. These documents include: Pre-Nuptial Questionnaire, Freedom Affidavits, Baptismal certificates, issued from church of baptism and dated within six months. Dispensations and annulments of previous marriages can be facilitated by your parish.
Marriage License, which is a civil document, must be obtained from the County Clerk of any county in Utah within 30 days prior to the marriage. The Salt Lake County Clerk is located at 2001 South State Street, South Building, 2nd floor.
The usual way couples are formed is that they attend the Engaged Encounter weekend weekend and the Natural Family Planning Class, both of which issue certificates to be included with the documents submitted prior to the wedding. These last two activities function to form and facilitate communication between you as a couple and may not be excused by your priest, if you wish to have your wedding at the Cathedral.
FEES
A wedding date will not be reserved until the donation is made in full. Please note that it is not refundable should you cancel. We will assist you to reschedule when necessary.
Please note: None of these fees go to the officiating priest or deacon. If you wish to make a gift to the presider, it should be done separately and must be clearly indicated as a personal gift.
SCHEDULING
The times for rehearsals are important as only 60 minutes is allotted due to events at the Cathedral that follow them. Please be on time. Likewise, a wedding scheduled at 11:00 AM, with photo opportunity following, must conclude at 12:30 PM. A wedding scheduled at 1:30 PM, with photo opportunity following, must conclude at 3:00 PM.
REHEARSAL
Should you employ an outside wedding coordinator, their position ceases within the Cathedral. The Cathedral coordinator will guide the rehearsal and the wedding day processional. The marriage license must be given to the coordinator at the rehearsal. The order of the entrance processional is determined by the options available in the ritual and may be discussed with the coordinator. If you desire a lector or gift bearers of your own, they need to be present and practice with the coordinator. Only the bride, groom, and two witnesses of documentation (over age 18) will be seated on sides of altar in the sanctuary. Young attendants may require chaperones in procession.
